a.m. on your saturday. it's already raining outside in many spots especially along and into the south and east of the 95 corridor. that's where the bulk of the rain will stay for your saturday. but nonetheless, if you live in and around town you'll want that umbrella. as you look outside, temperatures in the low 60s to upper 70s. 71 at national airport, 68 in hagerstown right now. doesn't look like a whole lot on storm 4 radar just yet, but what is out there will get you wet for sure. showers pulling through annapolis on the bay bridge and showers with a rumble or two of thunder. southern charles county, northern st. mary's county and down towards the fredericksburg area. we're watching out today. you folks in the blue ridge, you'll have a dry day where southern maryland will have a soggier day. split day today. temperatures will climb into the mid and upper 80s. you get more sunshine, on the warmer side, you folks in
southern maryland probably the low 80s with the rain showers. breaking news in decision 2012. multiple sources tell nbc news that mitt romney will name wisconsin congressman paul ryan as his running mate this morning. romney announced that he would reveal his pick for vp at 9:00 this morning in norfolk, virginia, his first stop on a four-day bus tour. the running mate announcement will be made at the nauticus museum which is home to the "uss wisconsin" another hint that romney will pick ryan. the 42-year-old house republican is serving his seventh term in congress. he has a strong fiscal background and serves as the chairman of the house budget committee. in that role, he offered a budget plan in 2011 called the path to prosperity aimed at significantly put k lly cutting deficit.
it changes the medicare system to a voucher system. >> this could make the ryan plan a centerpiece and it's had mixed results. there were a couple of special elections in house races where the medicare plan, ryan's plan, was the reason that republicans lost the seat. with ryan as a pick, there's a sense of enthusiasm in the base of the party. you have a young leading figure in the party. that was lacking as well. for mitt romney, this is risk. and it's risk that he probably needed to exert. >> republican strategists say ryan could also bridge the gap between the gop establishment and tea party conservatives who have yet to fully embrace romney. >> as we mentioned the announcement kicks off a four-day, four-state bus tour for romney after holding the rally with ryan in norfolk, the new republican ticket will make their way to ashland just outside of richmond, then around 4:00 this afternoon, they'll
hold a rally in manassas, but they won't be the only bus on the road. rolling just ahead of romney and ryan will be this bus created by the democratic national comm committee. the slogan for their trip, romney-economics, the middle class under the bus. the bus will head to the same battleground states planned for romney's tour, north carolina, florida and ohio. >> meanwhile, no reaction from the white house on today's announcement. president obama heads to chicago later today to hold some high price fund-raisers on sunday. he's scheduled to attend four separate fund-raisers including one at the family's chicago home. that one will cost $40,000 per attendee. the president joined the muslim community last night for the annual ethtar dinner, that marks the month of ramadan t holiest month in the muslim calendar. he talked about the sikh temple
shooting saying that no american should have to fear for their safety because of their religion. we'll bring you the official announcement as soon as it happens. that's expected at 9:00 this morning. you can keep up to date with all decision 2012 developments any time on our website, nbcwashington.com. expect delays on almost all metro lines this weekend doour due to track work. the red line medical center and bethesda stations will be closed about shuttle buses can take you between grovs nor and foggy bottom and claire enden as well as stadium armory. and foggy bottom and arlington cemetery and on the green line trains will also share a single track between fort tynan and prince george's plaza. metro appears to be getting more mistear yus about its rider program. it refuses to disclose the
findings of its latest mystery rider program under way since february. the money comes from commuter fares and taxpayer dollars. but the transit agency denied a public records request from the examiner this week. passengers at dulles had quite the scare as two planes clipped each other while on the ground yesterday afternoon. a lufthansa flight was leaving its gate when it hit the tail of a united airlines plane that had just landed. no one was hurt in this incident, though it did change some travel plans to tore passengers. >> it's been canceled. we're just about to rent a car and drive to raleigh/durham. it looked like on the tail a piece was cracked out, almost like a piece of a tin can had just been torn up. it was kind of weird looking. >> both planes are out of commission while they get repaired. all of thepassengers got to their final destinations on other planes.
just two days before the 2012 games come to a close. the u.s. had plenty of chances to add to its medal lead over china. tracy potts has a look at today where the u.s. could bring home the gold. >> the u.s. women's relay team starts this afternoon's 4x400 meter final in first place and not feeling the pressure. >> what an exciting race. these young ladies, a pleasure to run with. >> half an hour later the men's shorter relay looked for team usa in lane seven. >> we trust each other, i trust these guys. we can stick around and turn it up a couple notches, we're ready to go. >> flower power could power alicia mon tanno to the medal stand and the hottest ticket in london. three americans take on britain's favorite. >> try to get that goal that i'm looking for. >> the divers who won bronze together here last week compete
against each other today. and we can see two more women's teams land on top. volleyball's tonight. the u.s. versus brazil. just like four years ago. brazil won last time, but this time the u.s. is top ranked, seeking their first gold medal. and basketball, the women's final against france tonight. >> at this point, you just have to trust the players. because there's really not much that you're going to change or you're going to add or do different. >> the u.s. is hoping to preserve a 40-game winning streak. tracy potts, nbc news, london. with two days of the events left the united states wrapped up the number one spot for both total medals and gold medals. the u.s. has 41 golds with china in second at 37 and the u.s. leads china by 13 total medals, 94-81. >> you can credit a lot of the women athletes for bringing home a lot of those medals. maybe the women's volleyball team can pull it out today.

we're following breaking news this morning. in just about four hours mitt romney is expected to announce his vice presidential pick in norfolk. three sources have told nbc news it's expected to be wisconsin congressman paul ryan pap stay with news 4 for updates on this big announcement through the morning. the sikh community is mourning the loss of six people killed in a shooting rampage. thousands came together for a public memorial service in the milwaukee suburb of oerk creek. john yang reports. >> reporter: they came to a high school gymnasium to mourn. sikhs and non-sikhs, family and friends, police and first responders joined by hundreds
and hundreds of total strangers. her mother was the only woman killed in the attack. >> as i look around, i don't just see christians or jews, i see everybody. >> reporter: the six died when a gunman burst into the temple sunday morning. page was shot by police, then took his own life. sandy recalled her father and his devotion to the pem pel. >> they died a painful death and they died under wrong conditions but they died at a place where god would take them. >> reporter: attorney general eric holder represented president obama. >> you have inspired the very best in who we are. >> reporter: investigators have returned the temple to the congregation who tore out the bloody carpet and repaired damages, but they're keeping a single bullet hole in a door frame as a lasting memorial.
temple president's son found another memorial this weekend in his late father's journal, a list of children's needs. number five, don't become prejudiced. >> one day he was going to deliver to us, my brother and me, and that day came far too early. >> reporter: a day that came too early for an entire community. john yang, nbc news, oak creek, wisconsin. right now police on both coasts are working to figure out who killed a maryland man in southern california. the body of 45-year-old dwight henry turned up in an suv in southern california back in may. he'd been beaten to death. investigators from the los angeles county sheriff's department are in maryland. they're trying to find out why henry was in california in the first place. his family's pleading for anyone who talked to henry before his death to come forward. >> he didn't ask people for anything. all he did was gave. just give him peace.
let him rest in peace. >> dwight henley was popular in the local soccer community. investigators are turning to his fellow athletes to see if they know anything. >> table games in maryland casinos are one step closer to becoming a reality. the state stait senate passed a bill yesterday allowing table games and a new casino in prince george's county. it heads to the house where lawmakers will debate starting monday. the state's voters will have the final say in november. now here's something to help you prepare for back-to-school. starting tomorrow, tax-free week begins in maryland. shoppers will not have to pay the 6% state sales tax on clothes and shoes under $100. however, accessories such as jewelry, purses and belts, they're not included. it does not include school supplies either. tax-free week ends next saturday, the 18th. >> get your credit card out. >> i know.
this weekend mother nature is putting on one heck of a show. starting at 34d night tonight, it will be your best chance to see perseid meteor shower. that's the perseid meteor shower. scientists say there could be 90 to 100 meteors each hour. this is likely your only shot to see this meteor shower. it will come along again in july 21 of '26. >> there are other meteors falling from the sky. they're hydrometeors and they're rain drops.
not necessarily the best start that everybody wanted, but still nearly eight inches behind for rainfall for the year. even rain on a saturday still have to be tolerated, at least a little bit because it's so dry across the area. the good news is the second half of your weekend is looking noticeably drier than the first half. that being said, the first half might be a little soggy for you down into southern maryland. if you are headed on in to the beaches today, it won't be a bad day to drive to the beach, but it may not be a bad day to sit on the sand. but a cloudy and soggy start here in the washington area. rain drops have fallen across the area this morning. temperatures are relatively pleasant. 71 at national airport. winds out of the south averaging 5 miles an hour. we're off to a kind of wet start. you folks right along the western shore of the bay, well into the mid and upper 70s. but back out to the west, temperatures upper 60s to near
70. your saturday planner today, cloudy and wet to get your day started. the rain drops will be coming to an end as the day wears along. they'll end first up in the mountains of west virginia and last down across parts of southern maryland. a big differential in the forecast this weekend. you folks north and west of town will have a lot more sunshine and many more dry hours where from washington southbound into southern maryland could be on the soggy side. there's rain drops moving through annapolis. a rumble of thunder could be heard across charles county and cal vert county. these are aiming right into southern maryland. if you are living in st. mary's county and it is not raining now, it will be raining shortly. back of the blue ridge, most of the moing east of the mountness you folks from winchester a noticeably drier day for. you kind of wet to get you started but gradually the rain drops leave north and west and the rain drops sneak their way out of southern maryland as well. there will be a drying trend through the weekend but if
you're headed on out to the beaches a noticeably cloudier weekend at the coast line for the weekend than we'll have around here. sunshine returns by tomorrow afternoon. looks like we'll get off to the new week on monday with a good start as well. there's your weekend forecast at the beach. rainy skies for today. showers ending tomorrow. then as you get into early next week, a little bit better beach weather. for us cloudy sky, rain likely more most locations east of the mountains. then rains primarily confined to the south and the east of the d.c. metro area. then showers coming to an end gradually, temperatures near 60. then tomorrow afternoon more sunshine. warmer and drier. most of us i think will enjoy our sunday. there's your extended forecast. 87 today with an 80% chance of rain. tomorrow i don't have a raindrop posted but there could be a few showers in southern maryland tomorrow. i'll be keeping an eye on that. then our next real rain chances after this morning return

aprin may cut your risk from dying from cancer. researchers found those that were taking aspirin before any cancer diagnosis had a 60% lower mortality rate. five years after their cancer diagnosis. now, that's lower than previous study, but experts say you should still talk to your doctor about the benefits and risks of taking aspirin daily. if you are looking to get out and about this weekend, there is plenty in our area going on that you can take advantage of. and some, they won't cost you a thing. we're at the news 4 superscreen with what's free in the dmv. >> that's right. i have a timeline of fun and free suggestions for this weekend. today and tomorrow, you can get a free guided walking tour of d.c. it's called d.c. walkabout. we hear the tours are not only cool for visitors but also fun for longtime residents as well. there's a tour at capitol hill that starts at 10:00 a.m. at the capitol reflecting pool and

plenty of showers first thing this morning not expecting any severe weather. that's welcome news. but if you live east of the mountains today and especially into southern maryland the clouds and the rain chances will linger longer for you if you live farther down to tout and east. everybody gets a better drier day for tomorrow. generally in the 80s both days. i think we're done with the 90s courtesy of the cloud cover. so that's good news. >> thanks, chuck. breaking news on the campaign trail. multiple sources tell nbc news that wisconsin congressman paul ryan will be named mitt romney's running mate later this morning. the presumptive republican nominee announced late last night that he would reveal his pick for vp at 9:00 this morning in norfolk, virginia. the running mate announcement will be made at the nauticous museum which is home to the "uss wisconsin" another hint that romney will pick ryan. he told chuck todd what he's looking for in a vp candidate.
>> i certainly expect to have a person that has strength of character, vision for the country, that adds something to the political discourse about the direction of the country. i happen to believe that this is a defining election for america. that we'll be voting for what kind of america we're going to have. >> several political pundits pointed out that that interview was an early indication that romney would pick ryan because of o ryan's budget plan. >> nbc has learned that several of the other picks on romney's short list have already been called and informed they were not chosen. romney's son tag apparently made some of those calls. tim pawlenty learned of the decision while stumping for romney in new hampshire and says there's no disappointment over the choice. >> i'm just going to continue to do what i've done since the on set of endorsing him, which is do what i can to help him, be a surrogate speaker on his behalf and certainly didn't start any of that with the expectation of
being a vice presidential candidate. i've said a number of times i can help in other ways. i'm excited about governor romney being the next president of the united states. >> rob portman received a call from romney and says he plans to continue to campaign with the new ticket. >> romney's pick kicks off a four-day four-state bus tour that begins in norfolk. he and ryan will travel together to ashland outside of richmond. they'll then finish the day with a rally at 4:00 in manassas. governor bob mcdonald says it is an extremely important trip through the commonwealth. >> making three stops in the three most populated regions of the state critically important. i'm going be with governor romney and help to tell his story and help to get people to see that this is an enormously successful person who has lived the american dream and, therefore, he understands the american dream. >> romney's tour also includes stops in north carolina, florida
and ohio. stay with news 4 all morning long for continuing coverage of mitt romney's running mate announcement. we'll bring you the official announcement as soon as it is made in the 9:00 hour. and you can keep up with all of decision 2012 developments any time on nbcwashington.com. in other news this morning police are looking for a man who robbed a d.c. superior court judge at gunpoint. two men with guns came up behind judge ronna beck. they had just left the tennis tournament in rock creek park. the robbers took off with purses, wallets, about 100 bucks in cash and the keys to a lexus. longtime residents say the area's typically a quiet neighborhood. >> police patrol. you know, we don't want judges being held at gunpoint. >> beck was the judge who oversaw the south capitol street murders trial.
no one was hurt in the robbery. new today investigators are looking into possible corruption involving the d.c. lottery. "the washington post" reports the fbi and the u.s. attorney's office are looking into the bidding process in the district's $228 million lottery contract. in 2009 the office of the chief financial officer awarded the contract to a multinational lottery firm called intralot. that firm then subcontracted to a local firm. at the time there was controversy because the d.c. council rejected the first bid. a gaithersburg woman is recovering this morning after a swarm of bats attacked her in her own neighborhood. dina knolls received six rabies shots yesterday. she was just walking her dogs when the bats swooped down and attacked her. in an exclusive interview, she talked to news 4 about the terrifying moment. >> there was probably like five of them or so and they were acting really aggressively.
so you know, i was really nervous. especially with the dogs. so i felt, you know, i got hit in the back. i was just like instant pain. it was like kind of a sharp stabbing pain. >> doctors say noels will be okay in a couple of days. she'll still walk the dogs at night but probably take them earlier in the evening to avoid another attack. members of the mount pleasant baptist church say they will rebuild their church that was destroyed by fire. around 4:30 yesterday morning the fire spread through the church on lee highway. when firefighters arrived they found flames shooting through the roof. no one was inside at the time. the inside of the church had extensive smoke and water damage but two bibles inside remained intact. church members are calling that divine intervention. >> the firemen came out and said, here is your bible, they were able to save the bible off a table.
>> this is our community church and all of us feel, you know, it's not a total loss, but all of us feel that the pain of having this happen. >> fire officials say the fire appears to have started at the back of the church. >> good luck to them. the time right now, 5:37. coming up, i learned to kick and punch like an olympic athlete. my tae kwon do training and how the olympic stars do it. plus the winning streak continues. was it the nationals pitchers or did the team's bats come alive?
you're watching news 4 today. >> gabby douglas' olympic accomplishment, excuse me, is now immortalized in her native virginia beach in a mural. it was unveiled yesterday on the side of a restaurant. the painting shows the 16-year-old holding one of her gold medals. artists started working on it on monday and they finished up late thursday. douglas won gold in the individual all-around and team events. douglas will be on "the tonight show" when jay leno returns monday night. the new dream team is one step closer to another medal. the u.s. men's team took on argentina for a chance to play in the championship tomorrow. it was a close game until the third quarter. then the u.s. simply took over. they defeat argentina, 109-83.
the men play spain tomorrow for the gold medal. a rematch of the match in beijing which the u.s. won. also shooting for gold the u.s. women's volleyball team against brazil. they defeated south korea in three state sets. the gold medal game today is a rematch from 2008. brazil dominated the matchup taking home the gold medal. today tae kwon do match wraps up in london. but i learned some of the techniques. she won the gold in tae kwon do but can arlene lemus turn a morning news anchor into a martial arts olympian? >> of course i can. >> some places you start a white belt. at power kix, you earn it. >> there will be techniques that you need to know and test on but you'll have to warm up first. >> we really are starting from
the beginning. >> yes. >> i got off to a running start throwing high knees, shuffling with my guard up and stretching out before learning the basics. >> your endurance level is much of a runner, like a long distance runner, but you have the flexibility and explosivety of a gymnast, you need that. and then you need to kind of have that mental tenacity of a boxer. >> to earn my belt i must master three techniques starting with my hands. >> when you punch at full speed, it snaps, like a rolled up towel. all right? ready? one, two. now, let's give a little yell. >> i found using my back foot gave me more power. >> awesome, awesome. shake them off. >> are you scared yet? next up perfecting the kick. >> our hands are up. we scope with the knee, snap it, then down. >> i also discovered yelling

i'm kind of scared right now. >> with these comments that you make making fun of me. >> what comments? i don't know what you're talking about. >> we do want to say congratulations to terence jennings who is from alexandria. he took home the bronze in tae kwon do. arlene lemus who won in gold in '98 said that he trained down in stafford. >> i like your warm-up, too. i like how you run. you're a funny runner. get your knees up. >> we could barely get through that because you guys were laughing so hard. but it was a lot of fun. you can see the men's final in tae kwon do today on nbc sports at 5:30. >> because we are about equal opportunity embarrassment, in case you missed it, i tried out some gymnastics moves last week. gymnastics one of the more popular events at the summer events especially with the gold medal performance from the u.s. women's team. i found out it definitely takes a lot of training and dedication to perfect the moves. it's not for amateurs like me.
>> jump straight up and hold yourself up on top of the rings and try to hold your legs straight out in front of you. that's called an l hold with your knees straight and toes pointed. >> yeah, that one's not easy. >> you have to have some core strength there. >> you need abs for that. >> just put your head here, head under, no, no, under. >> what do you mean under? >> right there, yes. >> you go and you slide your hands down, hold the beam, stay on. and get up. >> good thing you were helping me. >> getting up, getting up. all right. good. just sit down on the beam, just sit down. >> can we just stop running this already? all right. luckily i made it out okay. i didn't break anything there. >> oh, my lord! >> but i do want to thank the instructors over at capitol

quantico down through fredericksburg, stafford, all the way to the richmond area, another little batch of rain getting into southern virginia, that may travel east of the mountains and grace southern maryland and the southern suburbs of washington in the next six to seven hours. not a lot of sunshine unless you go back to the west. later today the cold front just down to the south should turn most of the rain off but again down around the lower parts of southern maryland and the eastern shore clouds and shower chances will linger much, much longer there today than out to the west. everybody gets a taste of sunshine back to finish off the second half of your weekend. heading down to the beach, the best day to get there. showery weather tapers off tomorrow. but again the further east you go down to the beaches, could be a cloudy affair this weekend. around town mostly cloudy, rain likely here this morning. rain mainly to the south and east of town by later on today.

just to the edge of the cup. stops short. tiger can't believe it. but he would be in the picture at the end of the day. so would this guy. carl pettersson started on the back nine, number 1 for birdie. pettersson, woods and vijay singh all tied at 4 under par. now to the nfl. you got to love some good old new york drama. one team is looking to defend their super bowl title, the other have a quarterback controversy brewing. the jets have mark sanchez as their starter but most believe he's just a mistake away from being replaced by tim tebow. tebow making his debut against the bengals. it was a rough one. after a three and out for the offense, conley in to punt for the jets. here come the bengals busting loose. cedric pearman recovers it in the end zone. they take the lead and go on to win this one 17-6.

choose paul ryan as his choice. >> he starts off a four-day tour through critical swing states. steve handelsman has more on the big announcement. good morning. >> reporter: if you're tired of the personal attack ads and the petty politics of 2012, you might welcome paul ryan to this presidential campaign. even democrats up here on capitol hill who hate his fiscal proposals say ryan is a big thinker about big ideas. republican sources tell nbc news this is the team, the 2012 republican ticket. congressman paul ryan campaigned with mitt romney in april in wisconsin, ryan's home state. >> the next president of the unite, governor mitt romney. >> reporter: romney, sources say, will introduce ryan in virginia this morning. he's a self-described republican
young gun, a staunch fiscal conservative, charismatic and energetic. as chair of the house budget committee, ryan proposed a tax and spending plan that would cut so deeply even some republicans including romney didn't buy it. a plan to turn medicare into a private voucher program that analysts say would raise what we pay for health care as it cuts government costs. and the ryan plan would lower the tax rate on the wealthy. >> you need really spending cuts and real spending controls going forward so we can deal with the debt in the future. >> reporter: romney is dealing with slipping polls as he picks a running mate, looking for ways to excite a skeptical gop conservative base. former minnesota governor tim pawlenty was told he's not the choice. >> this doesn't affect my attitude towards wanting him to be president. i'm going to continue to work really hard to help him in any
way i can. >> reporter: paul ryan would help romney get the campaign back on the big issue -- our financial crisis and the economy. but ryan on the ticket would also help team obama paint mitt romney as a candidate who's favoring the rich over seniors and the middle class. if the ticket in fact is romney/ryan, and there's every indication that will be the announcement about 9:00 eastern time today, this pair gets a road test a four-day bus trip starting today in virginia. live from washington, i'm steve handelsman reporting. all right, steve, thank you very much. steve talked a little bit about that bus trip. mitt romney and paul ryan kick off a multi-state bus tour today as the two will campaign for the first time as a presidential ticket. but democratic leaders will be one step ahead with a message of their own. news 4's melissa mollet
explains. >> reporter: this bus will be on the same route. the message is from the democratic national committee that the republican is throwing the middle class under the bus. the tour bus is wrapped with white right wriing and the image of a road. in one lane it says tax cuts for the rich. in the other tax hikes for the middle class. the tour is called the romney economics, the middle class under the bus. it starts here in alexandria. though this bus will run a day ahead of mitt romney, the tour will last four days and copy his weekend stops in virginia, north carolina, florida, and ohio. >> we don't want to directly confront his events. he deserves an opportunity to have his say when he has his events, but we're going to make sure that we get our message out as well. >> reporter: on board officials with the democratic national committee and at the stops dnc chair debbie wasserman schultz, lawmakers from the state romney used to govern, massachusetts,
and pennsylvania's ed rendell and iowa's chet cullver. >> really important for me to get on a bus and go to different parts of the country and talk about what i know. >> i'm a middle class person myself. i would be be hurt by romney's economics. ways hurt by his economics when he was governor. >> reporter: the bus showed up outside the committee headquarters in washington. it's the second bus tour set up to follow the candidate since june. mitt romney's communications director -- >> if anybody has thrown middle class americans under the bus, it's president obama. >> reporter: earlier this summer the other bus followed romney through key battleground states like ohio, iowa and pennsylvania. >> they have no record to run on o so this ve to rely on gimmicks like this to stalk governor romney. >> reporter: the bus will head to richmond, then norfolk, the tour is expected to wrap up on monday in ohio. in alexandria, virginia, melissa mollet, news 4. the white house has not responded to romney's vp pick.

hours for your weekend. they just won't be here at the front of it. outside now cloudy skies. the rain has tapered back just a touch first thing in washington. but there's still rain down across into southern maryland. current temperatures are in the 60s to near 70. storm 4 radar here shows that we do have a chance for showers. southern maryland especially. even a couple rumbles of thunder now. not too far from california and st. mary's college and southern maryland. look for a couple rumbles this morning. rain crossing over to the chesapeake bay bridge heading out to the eastern shore. and more rain out towards charlottesville and to the west of fredericksburg. we'll continue with showers here this morning, get a break, then a chance for a little bit more rain later today. rain chances will remain the highest to the east and the south of washington. basically the i-95 corridor south and eastbound, more rain this weekend back out to the west less rain this eked. we'll break it down more carefully in a few minutes. for now back to you. >> now to breaking news in india.
rescuers are on the scene of a bus crash that killed at least 39 people. police say the driver lost control of the bus at a sharp bend on a mountain road in northern india. the bus plunged more than 300 feet into a gorge. police say the bus was crowded at the time and the death toll could rise. a traffic alert for drivers in northern virginia. the east and westbound ramps from i-66 to southbound fairfax county parkway are closed for pave. the southbound fairfax county parkway is down to one lane between fair lake circle and the route 29 interchange. drivers may want to avoid the area altogether. the roads will reopen for the morning rush on monday. just a couple of days left in the 2012 olympics but there are still plenty of big events on the calendar. the u.s. will look to add to their medal count in a few different sports. news 4's zachary quiche joins us in the studio with more on that. >> good morning, richard. you're absolutely right. another big day in london. the u.s. will continue to build on their dominance in women's
basketball while the women's volleyball team looks for a little bit of revenge. the u.s. women's hoops team will take on france, and they're shooting for their fifth straight gold medal. all indications are they're full speed ahead. meanwhile the women's volleyball team looks to avenge their loss to brazil four years ago. brazil and mexico squares off in the men's soccer final. the u.s. men's track team shoots for gold in the relay later on tonight. >> here they come to the line. the u.s. will win it. in a new world record, 40.82. wow. >> allyson felix, tianna madison, bianca knight and carmelita jeter are in the u.s. history books. they set a record in the relay crushing the rest of the field. take a look at that there. it's a look at the first gold medal in the events since 1996. those were the olympic games in
atlanta. meanwhile, u.s. wrestler jordan burroughs continued his dominance on the mat collecting a gold for america. burroughing won in the final seconds capturing the gold to win his 48th straight match. he has a chance to keep the streak alive. he says he's going to compete in the 2016 games in rio. in our area continues to produce over in london bringing home medal after medal. alexandria native terence jennings taking part in tae kwon do. jennings in red trail brad ilian then jennings delivered a kick to the head. check that out, which gave him the win and the bronze medal. after the match, he talked to news 4's dan hellie about the thrill of winning an olympic medal. >> a little bit of just disbelief. once they put it around my neck, that's when it hit me and i smiled. it's real now. so it's a big deal for me.

step closer to enjoying table games in the state's casinos. they allowed table games and a new casino in prince george's county. lawmakers passed the bill during a special session and now heads to the house where they will debate the issue starting monday. even if the house does approve the bill, the state's voters will have the final say in november. a big win for pitbull owners in maryland. the state senate has voted to now hold all dog owners responsible for any violent attack by their pets. lawmakers made the change in response to a court ruling that specifically targeted pit bulls calling them inherently dangerous. under that ruling pitbull owners could be liable for a dog bite even if the pet didn't show signs of being dangerous before. it relees landlords' responsibility for bites on their property. a scary scene at dulles while two planes clipped each other. a lufthansa night was leaving its gate when it hit the tail of a united airlines plane that
just landed. no one was hurt from the collision. both planes are out of commission while they get repaired. all of the passengers on both flights eventually got to their final destinations on other planes. >> a fire damaged a second playground in northern virginia. now the burke community wants to know if it was also intentionally set. the latest fire happened early thursday morning. the lake braddock townhouse community raised thousands and spent two years to get the permits for the equipment. they installed three playgrounds this summer, now two have burned. >> our reaction was just how could this happen? we felt like burke is such a quiet laid back family community and we thought who could have done that? >> police arrested a juvenile in the first fire that happened last month. they're still looking into the cause of the second tire fire. given all pepco problems to keep the lights on, one montgomery county lawmaker wants to drop pepco altogether and create a new power company.
council member hans reamer suggested creating a county run power company. however he said any attempts to do so would probably get killed in the state legislature. reamer says people can voice their displeasure by pushing lawmakers for stricter regulation regulations. next a new estimate on how hard this year's drought will hit your wallet. hey, there's barely a line at space mountain.

the worst drought in more than 50 years is leading to bad news for corn farmer. the department of agriculture has released a report that estimates the average corn field will produce its lowest rate in 17 years. on top of that prices for an ear are expected to reach record highs. things aren't getting any better. the drought is at its worst it's been all year with 38% of the country experiencing severe drought conditions or even worse. but here we are getting some much-needed rain, right? >> a little bit shower activity first thing them, then a break and then we may have to contend with more shower chances later on today. but on the whole most of your weekend will be usable for outdoor activities but you just can't guarantee that it will all be the best possible. the good news is the grass is
wet this morning. so a lot of people planning on mowing the lawn, you don't have to do that now because the grass is too wet to cut. cut it tomorrow. it will be a better day for lawn mowing tomorrow than today anyway. outside on your saturday morning off to a cloudy start. the rain drops have ended in washington at least for now although i'm not 100% sure that we're done with rain chances for the day yet. it will bolster my opinion for why i think the rain chances are not yet done. for now the sun is just coming up. temperatures hovering at 71 degrees. winds southwesterly at 5 miles an hour. not expecting much of a breeze for today. southerly winds ahead of a weather front that will gradually turn the raindrops off from west to east during the course of the day. current temperature now 68 in hagerstown, 70 in leesburg and ashburn. and 71 degrees in capital heights and district heights. here's your saturday planner, cloudy with lingering rain drops
the front half of the day. as we go through the day, the day will trend to be drier and drier, but with a little sunshine and enough moisture around we might be able to cook up a few more afternoon showers chances. first thing this morning, there's the light rain now south of washington and east of washington and in to parts of southern maryland. that's where the rain will be the steadiest and probably last the longest for you folks in southern maryland. raindrops leaving the city of annapolis. but more rain coming through fredericksburg this morning. that's all headed into charles county, brandywine be on the lookout for more rain drops coming your way. then a break in the action. these showers are primarily heading for southern maryland today. you folks down into st. mary's county probably not going to see a whole lot of sunshine whereas if you go out towards martinsburg, west virginia, you will probably get sunshine back fairly shortly. a showery start today as the front slips farther to the south that will allow more and more dry air to come on in.
if you're headed down to the beaches for today, not the best beach day for tomorrow. tomorrow promises to be a touch better, but all the way at the beaches it does look like the clouds and the rain chances will linger through most if not all of the weekend. around here today, plenty of clouds here this morning, rain showers likely this morning. then rain primarily to the east and the south of i-95 by later this afternoon. tomorrow promises to be the better outdoor weather day. more sunshine, warmer, drier tomorrow. chance of a few showers still mainly to the south of town on your sunday. but even then won't be a washout. the all-important seven-day day forecast. most of that chance is in the front half of the day. most of us, if not all of us, will be dry tomorrow. and turning a little bit toastier as we head into the monday/tuesday time frame. keep that in mind. we're not completely done with summer. but we may be done with the 98s and 99s. >> that's when you test out the tan suit. >> i won't be able to wear it

the nauticus museum with the "uss wisconsin" as a backdrop. p ryan is expected to join romney on a bus tour through four swing states. president obama is set for a whirlwind of fund-raising. he's set to go to four different fund-raisers tomorrow including one held at his home. they're expected to raise millions as some of them cost as much as $40,000 a person. from american politics to team usa with two days of events left the u.s. will end the games with the most medals and the most gold medals. right now the u.s. has 41 gold with china in second at 37 and the u.s. leading china by 13 total medals 94-81. this is the fifth consecutive summer games the u.s. has led the total medal count. it could be another big day for the u.s. as they look to increase their lead in the medal count. >> jack wagner joins us from london with a preview of some of

town. highs today will gradually climb back into the mid and upper 80s. just a little bit of cloud cover left over by this afternoon. even though it's not going to rain all day long, still a good day to watch the olympics. see you in a few. >> right now police on both coasts are working to figure out who killed a maryland man in southern california. the body of 45-year-old dwight henley turned up in an suv in southern california back in may. he'd been beaten to death. investigators from the los angeles county sheriff's department are in maryland, and they're trying to find out why henry was in california in first place. his family is pleading for anyone who talked to henley before his death to come forward. >> he didn't ask people for anything. all he did was gave, just give him peace. let him rest in peace. >> dwight henley ri was popular in the local socky community. investigators are turning to his fellow athletes to see if they
know anything. >> this morning police are looking for the men who robbed a d.c. superior court judge at gunpoint. two men with guns came up behind judge ronna beck. they had just left the tennis tournament in rock creek park. the robbers took off with purses, wallets, about 100 bucks in cash and the keys to a lexus. peck was the judge who oversaw the capital street murder trial. no one was hurt in the robbery. sflanchts new exhibit hope opens today. the exhibit is called still standing, still free. at the pentagon. it helps mark 11 years since the deadly attacks. it features photographs from local photographers and even includes some never-before-seen pictures of the attacks. the exhibit is free and runs through the middle of september. members of a northern virginia church say they will rebuild their church after a
fire destroyed it. the historic baptist church went up in flames. that fire caused extensive smoke and water damage. no one was inside the church at the time but two bibles remained intact. some are calling that divine intervention. still no word on what sparked that fire. a gaithersburg woman is on the mend after bats attacked her after she was walking her dog. dina noels said she needed six rabies shots. she was walking her dogs when a swarm of bats swooped down and she says attacked her. doctors say knolls will be okay. >> i could never imagine. i don't know what i'd do. >> the time is 6:38. d.c.'s restaurant week begins in a matter of days. >> that's coming up. you keep hearing amazing things about verizon fios.

sam's club is offering free children's health screenings to get your kids ready for school. children will get dna test can and have their fingerprints taken as well as undergo an oral health screening among other tests. the screenings will begin at 11:00 this morning and end at 3:00 this afternoon. starting tomorrow, tax-free week begins this maryland. shopper will not have to pay the 6% state sales tax on clothes and shoes under $100. however, accessories such as jewelry, purses and belts, they're not included. it does not include school supplies either. tax-free week ends next saturday, the 18th. there's 253 million reasons why you may want to buy a powerball ticket. that's the estimated jackpot in today's drawing. however if you opt for the lump sum, the payout is $170 million. you can buy tickets in the district, maryland, virginia and west virginia. last time someone won the powerball jackpot was june 23rd.

is putting on one heck of a show. starting at midnight your best chance to see the perseid meteor shower. scientists say there could be 90 to 100 meteors each hour. it will not come again until july of 2126. >> they say all you need is a lawn chair. >> that's true. really? no telescope or anything? >> all you have to do is look up. it won't be terribly hard, but the problem may be cloud cover. because two things that can really interview with meteor shower viewing are clouds and, of course, light pollution. i've got two strikes against me. i live in the city and we've got cloud cover. i am probably not going to get to see any. >> maybe 2126. >> i think so. we might get to see them sooner than that if we're lucky. if you look up now, all you will see are clouds and, for some folks, mother nature you in the eye with a raindrop or two first thing this morning. outside as you look live over washington, a little sliver or two of sunshine trying to sneak
its way through the pretty thick deck of clouds we have in place. the sunshine will gradually win out later on this afternoon, but for now, not a whole lot of sun this morning. 71 now in reagan national airport, humidity at 90%, winds out of the southwest at 5 miles per hour. temperatures mostly hovering right near the 70-degree mark but out to our north and west and out to the west and south. 68 in culpepper this morning. so your saturday shower chances are confined primarily to the front part of the day except for you folks in southern maryland. down into st. mary's county more chances for rain lingering much further into the day. showers primarily south and east of town. you can see it on doppler, steadier moderate rain showers moving into parts of southern charles county, northern st. mary's county. you folks in culver county, those are coming your direction
as well. some rumbles are being heard across southern st. mary's county and more rain back down to the south and west. the trajectory of the rain drops is to take it mostly across southern maryland and the further west you live, the sooner the dry air will make its way into your area. low pressure up here in the great lakes, that's what's driving this whole storm system to the east. as it pulls away, it will drag this cold front through. it will take most of the day to get the front down to southern maryland where it will ease its way down to the coast line. everyone will get more sunshine to tomorrow than today although the possibility of a shower or two in southern maryland tomorrow. if you are headed out to the beaches, not the best beach weather today. tomorrow gets better and improving still as you get into monday. around town today mostly cloudy this morning with some rain drops around on the front half of the day. pm rain showers mainly to the south and the southeast of town. bluer skies and drier air should
